How to Take Apart a Tubular Motor How to Take Apart a Tubular Motor
Tubular motors are used to power blinds, shutters, retractable screens and awnings, and they also are used in many other roll-up applications. Their tubular shape is designed to fit in a rotating axle. Constant use can damage a tubular motor, and fixing it requires taking it apart completely.
Loosen the screws holding each end of the tube in place with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Set the screws aside for future use, and carefully remove the tube with one hand on each of its ends. Unplug the tube from the outlet.
Twist off the drive wheel from the end of the tube by hand, and set it aside. That task exposes the tube s interior, where the motor is located.
Find the gearbox in the side of the tube from which you removed the drive wheel. Slide the flat-head screwdriver above the gearbox, and carefully pull out the gearbox with the screwdriver. Place your hands inside the tube to locate wires. Pull the wires apart carefully.
Slide the flat-head screwdriver into the tube, and use it carefully to pull out the brake, which originally was behind the gearbox. That action exposes the tubular motor in the tube.
Slide two flat-head screwdrivers into the tube, and use them to grip each side of the tubular motor. Pull back carefully on both screwdrivers with each hand, sliding the motor out of the tube.
